Background of the Study
Hashtag‑based neologisms have become a powerful linguistic phenomenon on Twitter, particularly in Nigeria, where users generate new words and expressions to capture emerging cultural and political sentiments (Nwachukwu, 2023). This study examines how hashtag trends contribute to lexical innovation, focusing on the processes of word blending, abbreviation, and semantic shift. Nigerian Twitter users actively participate in creating neologisms that encapsulate complex ideas in succinct, memorable hashtags. These innovations spread rapidly across digital networks, influencing everyday language and contributing to a dynamic online lexicon. The study investigates the formation, dissemination, and social impact of these hashtag‑based neologisms, analyzing how they serve as markers of digital activism and cultural identity. By exploring various trending hashtags, the research aims to uncover the mechanisms driving lexical creativity and assess the broader implications for Nigerian digital discourse (Oluwaseun, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Although hashtag‑based neologisms are prevalent on Nigerian Twitter, there is limited systematic research on the processes underlying their creation and their impact on language. The rapid evolution and viral nature of these lexical innovations pose challenges for traditional linguistic analysis, leaving a gap in our understanding of digital lexical change. Without detailed investigation, the role of hashtags in driving semantic and syntactic modifications remains unclear, hindering the development of comprehensive models for digital language evolution. This study addresses this gap by focusing on hashtag trends as a case study, thereby elucidating the mechanisms of lexical innovation in Nigerian online discourse (Ibrahim, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  • To identify hashtag‑based neologisms in Nigerian Twitter trends.

  • To analyze the processes driving their creation and dissemination.

  • To evaluate their impact on digital communication and cultural identity.

Research Questions

  • What are the characteristics of hashtag‑based neologisms?

  • How are these neologisms formed and spread?

  • What impact do they have on Nigerian digital discourse?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines hashtag‑based neologisms on Nigerian Twitter, providing insights into the mechanisms of digital lexical innovation. The findings will enhance our understanding of how online activism and cultural trends drive language change, benefiting linguists and digital media scholars (Nwachukwu, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
Limited to Nigerian Twitter trends.

Definitions of Terms

  • Neologisms: Newly coined words or expressions.

  • Hashtag: A keyword preceded by “#” used to index topics.

  • Digital Discourse: Communication conducted through online platforms.
